The possibility to use inorganic nanoparticles as building blocks for the fabrication of supracolloidal assemblies has attracted much attention during the last years. It is thought that these constructs could be made of different shapes and functionalities and could constitute the components of future nanodevices such as sensors, actuators or nanocircuits. In the first part of my talk, I report a protocol that allows us to fabricate supracolloidal assemblies in a controlled manner. The building blocks of the constructs are iron oxide nanocrytals (superparamagnetic, size 7 nm) and polymers. I show that a fine control of the colloidal interactions result in the elaboration of spherical or elongated aggregates at the micrometer length scale [1-3]. With lengths comprised between 1 and 50 μm, the nanorods were found to be very rigid (persistence length ~ 10 cm) and to reorient themselves with an externally applied magnetic field. Applications of the rods to microrheology and microfluidics were evaluated.
Recent nanotoxicity studies revealed that the physico-chemical characteristics of engineered nanomaterials play an important role in the interactions with living cells. In the second part of my talk, I will review recent results on the toxicity and uptake of nanoparticles by living cells, including murine and human fibroblasts. I show that the uptake of nanomaterials by living cells depends on the coating of the particles and on its ability to preserve the colloidal nature of the dispersions.
