In recent years, driven by the development of nanotechnology, surface plasmon polariton (SPP) has become an important component of nanophotonic devices, and has been demonstrated as a very successful technology for optical biological sensing. SPP is a phenomenon observed near metallic surfaces. An SPP field consists of an optical field and an electric charge density oscillation, which couple to each other. It is not bound by the optical diffraction limit and can be focused to nano-scale regions for high sensitivity and high resolution detections. First discovered over a hundred years ago, SPP is still being rediscovered in a variety of contexts and applications today. In this talk, I will introduce several research projects on nanoplasmonics biosensing, which include single molecule DNA identification in microfluidic devices, detection of a poliovirus’ entry into a cellular membrane, surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy, and fiber-tip biomarker sensing.
