ABSTRACT

With a new generation of nuclear power plant designs and the evolution of computational capabilities, there is a growing need for improved methods of safety assessment. The new generation nuclear power plants will be designed to minimize risk in ways that challenge the credibility of traditional probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) results. Two areas that have received substantial attention recently are the use of passive components and digital instrumentation and control systems in future generation reactors. The ongoing work at The Ohio State University targeting these areas will be overviewed, along with a historical perspective on the evolution of dynamic methods for PSA.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Tunc Aldemir received his PhD in nuclear engineering from the University of Illinois and is Professor and Chair of the Nuclear Engineering Program at The Ohio State University. His broad area of specialization is nuclear reactor safety, with emphasis on reliability and probabilistic safety assessment (PSA). His research in PSA focuses on systems which may be difficult to model using conventional techniques, such as those with significant hardware/software/human/process interactions, passive components and/or relying on natural phenomena for safety. He has published more than 100 refereed articles on dynamic methodology development for the PSA modeling of such systems. He is a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society and on the editorial board of Reliability Engineering and System Safety.
