报告题目:Engineering Approaches to Dissect Deep Brain Structures

In many deep brain nuclei, neural circuitry consists of different neuronal types. But traditional technologies cannot sort out of activities of specific type of neurons from all the signals recorded or trace the anatomical input/output of specific neuronal types. We are developing several cutting-edge methods, by combining mouse genetics, vial transgenes, electrophysiology and optical imaging to precisely record/manipulate/trace targeted neurons. We plan to use these new methods to attack two related neurobiological questions,
1. Mammalian olfactory processing in higher brain areas.
2. Long term dynamics of neural circuitry important for mood regulation.
These researches will not only improve our understandings of basic mechanisms of neural coding but also may shield light on the clinical interventions of psychiatric diseases.
